Lake Tana
Lake Tana is the largest Lake in Ethiopia. It is expanded from 75 km North-South and 68 km East-West, with a range of 9–14 m in depth. The elevation of Lake Tana is 1,800 m above sea level. Lake Tana is rich in fish and birds species. It is an interesting Lake with more than 40 islands. Unlike other rift valley lakes in Ethiopia, found the highlands. The lake holds a special place in the hearts of Ethiopian Christians, as refugee during the times of invasion and occupation. When Axum was taken by Muslim forces in the 16th century, it is said that the Ark of the Covenant was brought to a Lake Tana monastery for safekeeping.
Simien Mountains National Park
The Simien Mountains National Park, which is located about 120 kilometers north of the historic town of Gondar, is another tourist destination site of the area. The Park is established in 1969 and it is also registered by UNESCO in 1978. The park in identified as one of the most impressive landscapes in the world with sharp mountain peaks and deep valleys. The highest peak which is named as Ras Dashen, measures an altitude of 4620 meters. Moreover, the park is home of wild animals that are endemic to Ethiopia such as the Gelada baboon, the Semen fox and the Walia Ibex.
Lake Hayq
Lake Hayq is a freshwater lake found outside the Great East African Rift Valley. It is 6.7km long and 6km wide with a surface area of 23km². It has a maximum depth of 88m and is at an elevation of 2,030m above sea level. It is one of the highland lakes of Ethiopia. Special features on the lake are Debre Egiziabher and St Istifanos monastery.
